Sleeping Text Effect

Although it is flat sprites, it looks 3D. This is made possible by parallax distortion in the material setup. This can be seen in the animated gif below. This same technique has many uses including faking depth when looking in a window of a building or giving transparent sci-fi control panels multiple layers.

Frost Shield Effect

It's been a little while. I have been programming a mobile game. I made a new effect today. This effect is a frost shield. The idea I had in mind for this effect was to be able to fit into the play style of an MMO which is why the shield only lasts for a short time.

New Modeling Project

I have started modeling a new project. Here is the work in progress on the landscape. This is just getting the rough shapes and layout but will be refined as the project continues. It will be a scene overlooking a tropical forest with a large waterfall and temples or dwellings built on top of small mountains.

Water Splash

This effect is a water splash. It could be used for a fountain, water falling and hitting a surface, or other similar scenarios.

There are two versions. The first is simpler and more stylized. The second is more complex and meant to look less stylized.

Meteor Shower

This effect is a Meteor Shower Spell. After the spell is cast, a meteor shower rains from the sky with explosive impact leaving all enemies inside extra crispy.

Lightning Strike Spell

This effect is a lightning strike spell that might be seen in an action game or rpg. The clouds form in a semi-circle in the air while targets form on the ground. Next the lightning strikes down. After the lightning finishes, the targets and clouds fade away.

Muzzle Flash

This effect is less fantasy and more realistic. This muzzle flash is intended for machine guns or other similar weapons.

Frost Breath

This effect is a frost breath spell. It can be used to slow down or freeze enemies. I could not decide if there should be snowflakes so I've done one with and one without.

Fire Breath

This effect is fire breath that might come from a dragon or other monster. Or maybe even a wizard. In this effect, I was able to simulate a fiery feel with only one texture.


And here it is in an animated GIF format. I think GIFs are great for short things like effects due to their low file size and they loop automatically.


In addition to the new effects above, here are GIFs of the poison attack and healing spell. They are much easier to see when animated as opposed to a still frame.

Healing Spell

Being Labor Day weekend, this past weekend was fairly busy. Effect number 3 is a healing spell. The circles on the ground spin as do the small dots and the outside streaks.. I chose a lighter, pastel palette for the colors.

New Work - Poison Attack

Here is some new work I've done. I'm trying to start a new plan to improve my speed. My goal is to create one effect each day (unless I am busy with other things). Here is day 1. It is a poison attack that might be seen in an action game or an rpg. It has three stages as seen in the pictures. Stage one is the initial strike. Stage two is the cracking in the ground. And the last stage is burning til it fades away.

Explosion Update

I'm back. Went out of town for a bit so I couldn't do much til I returned. Here is the almost finished explosion. I took the renders from Maya to After Effects to lay them out in a sprite sheet layout. Then I brought them into UDK to create the explosion. The last major thing left is to make the explosion produce light.

It's Been A Long Time and Updates

Hey! It's been a while. I have been working on a project called Heavy Gear Assault with a team which is why I haven't posted anything lately. But I'm here now to give an update. If you want to know more about Heavy Gear Assault, google it and look at the website. I can't really give out too much information on it but you can find plenty on the Heavy Gear website.

In other news, I've been doing work with Maya fluids a lot lately. Here is a little sample of what I've been working on.

It's Been A Little While

I've been busy with other things these past few weeks. There was the holidays and I was out of town for about 10 days afterwards. This is another update on the Sci-Fi Hallway. I think I'm going to call this one finished soon. I finished modeling the roof. I also have the normal map on. I'm going to touch up the texture later as well as it's missing a proper spec map. I've also worked on the window material so now the scratches show better but in doing so, I have lost the reflection so I will get to that soon, too.
